However, for those young readers who have knowledge about WWII, there is nothing in this novel that would make it inappropriate for them. Younger elementary audiences have probably not gotten into World War II in their course of study, so they may lack the background knowledge to contextualize this novel. Character's clothing have the pop of color to contrast with the brown backgrounds, drawing the eye in to them on the page.įirst Second rates this book for ages 12-18, and that seems appropriate. Although protagonist Kiku is a high schooler in this story, I believe this book is appropriate for MG readers and seems to be aimed at them (although YA readers will enjoy the book as well). The present has a teal palette, and occasionally the two are mixed together. Displacement by Kiku Hughes In this 2019 time travel graphic novel, Kiku finds herself sent back in time to a World War II Japanese internment camp. For MMGM and IMWAYR, I am wholeheartedly recommending the graphic novel Displacement by Kiku Hughes. The past has a brown palette, referencing the dust of the camps and the dust that precedes displacement. Hughes' illustrations are simple and clean, and beautifully colored. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Stephen king cujo dogSo they bought several duplicate 1978 Ford Pintos and sawed them into pieces to give de Bont some more wiggle room with his camera. With the climax of Cujo confined to the interior of a station wagon, Teague and Blatt became increasingly concerned that the shots could quickly become too repetitive to maintain the claustrophobic tension they needed. The novel's contained setting was happily grandfathered in, as it enabled a Cujo film adaptation to be shot on the kind of low budget that many hit slasher films of the era were using, like John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Of course, it didn’t hurt that King’s '80s tale of a demented dog required only minimal shooting locations like a cost-effective “bottle episode” of television. Cujo was the perfect vehicle to put the bestselling horror novelist back on the big screen. The financial success of the actual Jaws sequels, Jaws II (1978) and Jaws 3-D (1983), further cemented the notion in early 1980s Hollywood that moviegoers were hungry for more man-versus-beast action horror. After all, the horror market in the late 1970s and early 1980s was saturated with Jaws ripoffs like Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive (1976), William Girdler’s Grizzly (1976), Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978), and Lewis Teague’s Alligator (1980). King’s creature feature-like plot and claustrophobic climax made Cujo a shoo-in for a Hollywood film adaptation. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Books like the divinersThen, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler’s most hellish prison. In addition to the thousands of documentaries and biographies that have covered Monroe’s abusive childhood, three failed marriages, and a career beset with predators, she has been the inspiration for at least three operas, hundreds of songs, graphic novels, paintings, and around a dozen plays, including the semi-autobiographical After the Fall and Finishing the Picture, as written by Monroe’s former husband, Arthur Miller. In those days, before the demands to “build the dang fence,” the act of crossing country borderlines wasn’t that big a deal. Having a perfectionist tendency is another element very likely to get in the way. The impact of that is that they get less support, much less visibility, and they end up doing a lot more work. According to Helgesen: “women will say ‘I’m going to keep my head down until I really get this job mastered.’ They don't reach out to anyone for help. When women get promoted or change jobs they should enlist allies on day one. Women may view asking for something as transactional, so they miss out on the value of the relationships.”Īnother element of missing the value of relationships has to do with changing roles. “But women can get stuck in building and building relationships and not asking for anything, for not leveraging the relationship to help with their lives and their careers. “Women do a good job building relationships,” Helgesen said. Women also need to embrace the need to leverage relationships. |
